In the Heart of the City -
With a Heart for the City

CHURCH PROFILE

The First United Baptist Church (FUBC) has long been a cornerstone in the City of Lowell. In 1826, the same year that Lowell was chartered as a township, our current worship building was constructed. Located in the center of the city, the First United Baptist Church is a living congregation that opens its doors seven days a week to our community. FUBC is an American Baptist Church and, in addition to our religious-oriented programs and services:

WE WELCOME DIVERSITY - Throughout our history, we have assisted many ethnic goups settled in Lowell. From the 1900's when we hosted services for Chinese immigrants, to the 1990's when we sponsored a congregation of Brazilian immigrants to form Renewed Baptist Church, to the present as we welcome immigrants from war-torn Liberia into our congregation, FUBC supports Christians from all countries. The office of the Liberian Assistance Association of Greater Lowell is located on our property.

WE SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES - Families in crisis, confused teens, the frail elderly, isolated single mothers, minorities who need help adapting to a new culture: Each year, more than 1,000 of them walk through the doors of the Community Counseling Center, operated by the Mental Health Association of Greater Lowell, Inc., seeking assistance. The Center, along with the Association, has made its home in the education wing of the First United Baptist Church for over twenty years.

WE SUPPORT COMMUNITY GROUPS - For over 70 years, the Lowell Garden Club and the Middlesex Women's Club have met at the church. The visiting Nurse Association, Family Services of Greater Lowell, Lowell Camera Club and Catholic Charities regularly host meetings and programs at our buildings as well. The American Red Cross trains health care assistants here.

WE ASSIST THOSE IN NEED - The Church is actively engaged in the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell: "to provide people in need with decent homes in decent communities." In 1994, FUBC became the organization's first Covenant Church. Habitat for Humanity relies on the First United Baptist Church for much of its local support. FUBC has provided evening meals and assistance to adults at the Transitional Living Shelter since 1986. The Church has supported the House of Hope, a shelter for battered women and their children located in Lowell, for several years. Our church provides emergency support to low-income families and senior citizens during time of crisis. We support the Open Pantry, a central food pantry, for those in need of emergency food supplies.

WE BRING MUSIC TO OUR COMMUNITY - The church's pipe organ, a cultural masterpiece, was built in 1855 by E.&G.G. Hook for the Church of Ascension, located in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1970, the organ was removed from the church, rebuilt by C.B. Fisk, Inc. and installed in FUBC. Today, it serves as an outstanding musical resource for the community for student recitals and public concerts. Over 300 people attend our annual Christmas Concert which includes the Chelmsford Community Band.
